Are you considering dental implants but worried about your jawbone's condition? Dental implant surgery relies on a strong jawbone for successful placement. However, if you've experienced bone loss due to tooth extraction, gum disease, or injury, you may need a bone grafting procedure before undergoing dental implant surgery.
Understanding Bone Grafting for Dental Implants
Bone grafting is a dental procedure that adds volume and density to your jawbone. When the bone surrounding a missing tooth is weakened, it must be strengthened to provide adequate support for the dental implant, remaining teeth, and surrounding tissues. Without sufficient bone, dental implant surgery may not be possible or may lead to implant failure.
Bone grafting is typically performed by taking bone from another part of the patient’s body (autograft), using bone from a human tissue bank (allograft), or utilizing bone material from an animal tissue bank (xenograft). Once completed, the grafted bone integrates with the existing bone, creating a strong foundation for future dental work.
Types of Dental Bone Grafts
There are four main types of dental bone grafts:
Autograft: Bone tissue is taken from the patient’s body, typically the chin, back of the jaw, or hip, and transplanted to the jawbone where density is low.
Allograft: Bone from a deceased donor is used, thoroughly cleaned to reduce the risk of disease transmission.
Xenograft: Bone material from an animal, usually a cow or pig, is utilized, with the underlying bone cleaned to reduce the risk of bacterial transmission.
Alloplast: Synthetic materials like calcium phosphate or calcium sulfate are used to create bone-like structures.
Who Might Need a Bone Graft Before Dental Implant Surgery?
Patients experiencing jawbone loss due to tooth extraction, gum disease, or trauma may require a bone graft before dental implant surgery. Factors like active gum tissue disease, previous dental infections, or smoking can also contribute to bone loss, increasing the likelihood of needing a bone graft.
